Benjamin Alldritt, North Shore News - High school completion rates on the North Shore remain among the highest in the province, according to a Ministry of Education report released Nov. 30.

In West Vancouver, 91.2 per cent of students who entered Grade 8 went on to graduate, the second highest percentage in the province. Of North Vancouver students, 87 per cent of those entering high school also graduated, placing that district sixth in B.C.

Completion rates are different from graduation rates, which measure only the percentage of Grade 12 students who earn their diploma.

Across the North Shore, high schools handed out 2,042 Dogwood Certificates this year.

West Vancouver's completion fell slightly from last year's 93 per cent, but has held steady in the low nineties for the past five years. North Vancouver's figure is a five-year high, up from the low eighties.

In both districts, completion rates were higher for girls than boys, an outcome seen in almost all the province's 93 districts.

While high school completion among aboriginal students in North Vancouver improved slightly, the 51.8 per cent rate still contrasts starkly with other groups. West Vancouver aboriginal statistics were not published because the student population is small enough to risk a violation of privacy.

Province-wide, public schools produced a 79 per cent average completion, independent schools 88 per cent. The biggest success story this year is in Revelstoke, which posted an impressive 97.9 per cent completion rate, with a perfect 100 per cent result among girls.
