New Traffic and Pedestrian Changes Coming to Edgemont
Changes are coming to Edgemont to make the area safer and more pedestrian-friendly! The District of North Vancouver is launching a one-year pilot project aimed at improving intersection safety, reducing vehicle speeds, and creating shorter, safer crossings for pedestrians in the Village.
What’s Changing?
At the intersection of Edgemont Boulevard and Highland Boulevard:
- A four-way stop replacing the current two-way stop to better manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
- Narrowed vehicle lanes near the intersection using non-permanent flexible delineators to slow traffic and make crossings safer.
At the intersection of Edgemont Boulevard and Crescentview Drive:
- Narrowed vehicle lanes with flexible delineators to reduce pedestrian crossing distances and enhance safety.
Why These Changes?
The intersection of Highland Boulevard and Edgemont Boulevard is one of the busiest in the area, with more than 500 pedestrians and 700 vehicles during peak hours. Between 2019 and 2023, it experienced 30 crashes—roughly one every two months.
Although traffic volumes and crash history meet nationally accepted guidelines for a traffic signal, community concerns led to a different approach. This pilot project uses a four-way stop and narrowed lanes to slow traffic while keeping the area safe and pedestrian-friendly.
What to Expect During the Pilot Project
The District will closely monitor these intersections throughout the one-year pilot and make adjustments as needed. Afterward, staff will report back to Council with recommendations for long-term improvements.
These changes are part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and improve the pedestrian experience in Edgemont Village, ensuring residents, visitors, and commuters can navigate the area safely and efficiently.
Keep an eye out for these temporary but impactful changes the next time you’re walking or driving through Edgemont Boulevard!
