B.C. Government Approves West Vancouver Ambleside Housing Plan After Council Deadlock

The Government of British Columbia has stepped into West Vancouver’s housing debate, officially approving the Ambleside Centre Local Area Plan after months of council deadlock. By amending the district’s Official Community Plan, the province has cleared the way for increased housing density in the Ambleside town centre, including mid-rise buildings along much of Marine Drive and taller developments in select locations. The move follows repeated warnings from the province that municipalities failing to meet housing targets and planning deadlines could face direct intervention.

The decision comes after West Vancouver missed provincial housing benchmarks and failed to complete several required housing directives by the end of 2025. While local council remained divided on specifics within the Ambleside plan, the province cited the fact that public consultation, technical studies, and planning work had already been completed. Provincial officials say the approval will support more homes, expanded commercial activity, improved public spaces, and better use of existing infrastructure. West Vancouver must still address additional density planning in other neighbourhoods, meaning the broader conversation around growth, housing supply, and community change is far from over.
